October Mixtape & Halloween Musings

October’s Playlist

If you want a playlist featuring the Halloween classics like Michael Jackson’s Thriller or Monster Mash, this isn’t the one for you. You can find Zombie on your own. And when you do, check out the Bad Wolves’ cover for a little more grit. I did save you from some Rob Zombie, Alice in Chains and AFI, but left you with Marilyn Manson screaming that he loves you. Cause at the end of the day, that’s what this holiday is for me: all love.

For a season, we honor darkness. A moment of death and decay. The days become darker. The leaves start to turn and fall. We turn our growth inward toward creativity. With Halloween, we express our fantasies through costumes and face paint. For a night, we believe in magic. It smells like wax candles and warm pumpkins. With skulls, tombstones, and wilted flowers scattered throughout our neighborhoods and favorite shops, we’re reminded of the impermanence of human life. It’s short and it will end quickly. To think about death is not to live in fear of it, but quite the opposite. To provide clarity, to honor the light, to inspire the everyday life we live.

So, you want it darker? I’m ready.

The creepiest of cocktails…

Last year, our mixology team had some fun creating custom cocktails for Tony Hawk’s annual Halloween party. While Tony skated the half pipe in his Ted Lasso costume, our mad scientist bartenders served guests these three elixirs.

malahat spirits rum, midori,
chartreuse, lime, coconut

woodford reserve bourbon, demerara, charcoal, bitters, orange

ketel one vodka, velvet falernum,
lemon, cherry

A haunted house…

There are some easy ways to make your home more festive for the Halloween season. I like to go with a traditional but elegant goth look. Silence of the Lambs is one of my favorite movies to watch during the season, so I’ve really been into these moths and black butterflies swarming around the house and tons of candles along with some moss on the mantle.

Don’t buy cheap chocolate.

I’m a big fan of Seth Godin. Here, he explains why buying cheap chocolate isn’t worth it.

Happy Halloween friends. I hope you enjoy the darkness of the season. I’d love to hear your thoughts on my playlist. Too much for your ears? Oddly enjoyable? Let me know!
