June Mixtape

My birthday always lands right around Father’s Day, graduation or the last day of school. Maybe that’s why I like to start celebrating early. Plus, it’s the beginning of the Padres season, the weather is warming up and people are ready to party. So when June 1 comes around, I’m 100% leading that parade with a bottle of champagne and using my birthday as an excuse to see all my friends, eat at all of my favorite places, treat myself, travel, and do #allthethings. In this celebratory month, this mixtape has a bunch of tracks that have become to the soundtrack of my life.

Recently, it’s been infused with acts from Coachella and my love for deep hip hop covers and mashups. The cycling instructor in me is going to coach you through this one so there are no surprises. We start off slow with the first couple of tracks because we gotta warm up. And then I’m gonna drop a—what we call a banger—and hit you with one my recent favs, BAD BUNNY BA-BAY. I’ll bring ya back down to those poolside vibes and the golden gratitude days. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the wildcard, A-1, who samples Tina Turner and reminds us, “love’s got everything to do with it”. And Teyana Taylor who pumps out a family anthem about an abundance of love. My second wildcard? La Roux. Some of you will skip this, take a water break or maybe miss it all together, but damn, she’s like a snake about to strike. She was a throwback and surprise guest at Coachella this year. Another absolute favorite at Coachella was Rosalía. I wish you could have seen her perform. Words and some crappy fan video on YouTube can’t capture the emotion or force this woman can bring to a stage. And to round out my recent festival experience, please watch the incredibly talented Fred again, Skrillex, & Four Tet, who took Frank Ocean’s spot in the line up and completely blew my mind.
