Baja-inspired fiesta at One Bunk in Barrio Logan

MIHO welcomed industry planners, vendors, friends and family to One Bunk in Barrio Logan for a Fiesta del Barrio. We took guests down the path less traveled to show them a piece of San Diego that is rich with Mexican culture, vibrant art, delicious food, fresh pressed cocktails, and an eclectic and authentic event space. At One Bunk, we celebrated our surrounding neighborhood on May 5, marking the first day of Barrio Logan’s famed La Vuelta Car Cruise, a community of car lovers showing off their low riders and celebrating with family. With Cinco de Mayo festivities happening, the neighborhood was poppin’ and we just layered on to that with some great tunes, good friends and delicious food.

When entering the building it was important to highlight the neon “Que Sea Un Gran Dia” sign, reminding everyone to make a great day. As we welcomed guests into the binational event space, they were greeted with innovative street art in a traditional gallery setting featuring many San Diego and Tijuana based artists. The gallery exits into an open courtyard flanked with two shipping containers on either side. The entire outdoor space boasts unconventional materials incorporated into innovate design elements, including planters made from repurposed tires, packing crates with native succulents.

Guests were encouraged to admire the live art by Scarlett Baily, snap a photo in the Amigo Booth, mingle with friends in the industry and settle in for a delicious Baja-inspired menu.

Culinary direction led by our co-founders Juan Mirón and Kevin Ho, the menu was inspired by our favorite restaurants in Mexico City, Oaxaca, Valle de Guadalupe, Tijuana and our own neighborhoods in San Diego, but with a dim-sum style of service where guests could choose their own plates from the menu. It was important for us to serve dishes in our own way, but paying homage to the flavors we grew up with.

We started guests off with table-side palomas and margaritas made from scratch and served in traditional clay cups we sourced from Mexico.

Our tequila and mezcal expert wandered through the venue offering an education and a tasting. Best enjoyed with orange slices, tajin and even sal de gusano, a traditional Oaxacan spice made from sea salt, toasted and ground agave worms and chile costeño. Guests enjoyed multiple tray-passed plates. A new culinary exploration was the Salsa Verde Chicharrón taco which we made our own crispy chicharrón and then braised them in salsa verde and served the pork with crema, cilantro, radish on a locally made tortilla. And the crowd favorite was our vegan Squash Blossom taco made with cashew "ricotta" fried and served with habanero chamoy and pineapple salsa.

The entire One Bunk venue space is an artistic, progressive, and yet customizable space, ideal for innovate events and celebrations. It felt great to gather with our industry friends safely and responsibly, but mainly to treat them to the MIHO Experience. We couldn’t have done it without our partners.
